Short answer
The key point first
Family and couples counselling is a process that helps people in a relationship to understand each other better, recognise recurring conflict cycles, and express their needs more constructively. Sessions typically last 90 minutes, and the aim is not to find out who is right, but to understand the workings of the relationship together.
Family and relationships: the strongest bonds, the deepest challenges
Family and close relationships can be our greatest source of support, but also the arena for our deepest challenges. Communication problems between partners, conflicts between parents and children, boundaries with extended family, or the impact of life changes on the family dynamic are central to many people's search for support.
A psychologist in Ankara and searches for Ankara family counselling are often made following a feeling of being 'stuck' in a relationship. The repetition of the same arguments, the build-up of unspoken issues, or a sense of growing apart are common signs of this feeling.
This guide has been prepared by the Özel Vivere Aile Danışmanlık Merkezi Knowledge Centre to explain common dynamics in family and couple relationships and the family counselling process in an impartial way.
What is family counselling and couples counselling?
Family counselling is a process where family members explore their relationships with each other, their communication styles, and their roles within the family. The focus is not on a single individual, but on the family system as a whole.
Couples counselling focuses on the challenges within the relationship of married, engaged, or cohabiting partners. Topics such as communication, trust, intimacy, decision-making, co-parenting, and future plans are frequently addressed in couples sessions.
In Turkey, family counselling is a field regulated under the legislation of the Ministry of Family and Social Services (Aile ve Sosyal Hizmetler Bakanlığı). Family counsellors are specialists who have completed a Ministry-approved certificate programme on top of their relevant undergraduate degree.
| Topic | Family counselling | Couples counselling |
|---|---|---|
| Participants | Family members (parents, children, others as needed) | The two people in the relationship |
| Focus | Family system, roles, communication | Relationship dynamics, intimacy, trust |
| Typical duration | 90 minutes | 90 minutes |
| Common topics | Parent-child conflicts, life transitions | Communication, periods of crisis, future plans |
Recurring conflict cycles
Most conflicts in relationships are actually a repetition of the same cycle revolving around different topics. One partner criticises, the other becomes defensive; one pursues, the other withdraws. As this cycle repeats, both partners feel misunderstood and alone.
The goal in counselling is not to determine 'who is right', but to make this cycle visible together. Recognising the cycle opens up space for couples and families to try new ways of breaking it.
- The criticise–defend cycle
- The pursue–withdraw cycle
- The blame–counter-blame cycle
- The silence–build-up–explode cycle

Core principles of constructive communication
Constructive communication is not about avoiding disagreements altogether, but about being able to discuss them without damaging the relationship. Certain core principles can guide this process.
'I' statements involve speaking in the format of 'I feel... because I need...' instead of 'You always...'. Active listening means checking you have understood correctly by summarising what the other person has said in your own words. Taking a time-out is agreeing to pause a discussion when it becomes too intense and return to it after a set period.

Pre-marital counselling
Pre-marital counselling is a process that creates a space for couples who have decided to marry to discuss their expectations, values, family models, and future plans together. The goal is not to solve problems, but to create a preventive foundation for potential future challenges.
In these sessions, topics such as managing finances, sharing household responsibilities, plans for having children, relationships with extended family, and ways of resolving conflict can be explored.

Co-parenting and the family dynamic
Having a child is a life transition that profoundly changes the couple's relationship. Sleeplessness, time constraints, new responsibilities, and different parenting styles can lead to new tensions between partners.
Co-parenting is about two parents developing a shared stance on child-rearing, supporting each other, and presenting a consistent approach in front of the child. For divorced or separated parents, co-parenting is also crucial for the child's well-being. The parental guidance page offers further information on this topic.

Intergenerational relationships and the extended family
In Turkey, extended family relationships hold a significant place in couple and family life. Grandparents' involvement in childcare, family interference in decision-making processes, or the care of ageing parents can be a source of both support and tension.
In counselling, work can be done on establishing healthy boundaries with the extended family, enabling the couple to make their own decisions together and create their own family dynamic while maintaining respect for all family members.

When might you consider family or couples counselling?
Every relationship goes through difficult periods. However, the following situations may indicate that talking to a professional could be beneficial.
- Having the same arguments over and over again
- Finding that important topics have become impossible to discuss
- Struggling to recover after an event that has broken trust
- Life transitions (birth, moving house, job loss) disrupting the family dynamic
- Noticing that children are being affected by tension within the family
- Needing support during a separation or divorce process
How do family and couples sessions work?
Family and couples sessions typically last 90 minutes. In the initial sessions, each participant's perspective is heard, and an understanding of the relationship's history and current challenges is developed. The professional maintains a neutral stance, creating a safe space where everyone can express themselves.
As the process unfolds, the work focuses on communication patterns, roles, and needs. In some cases, individual sessions may be planned in addition to joint sessions. For detailed information, you can review our couples counselling in Ankara page.
